{"id":23,"date":"2014-06-03T13:23:16","date_gmt":"2014-06-03T13:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rochesterbusinessdirectory.org\/blog\/?p=23"},"modified":"2014-06-03T13:23:16","modified_gmt":"2014-06-03T13:23:16","slug":"make-sense-raise-minimum-wage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/rochesterbusinessdirectory.org\/blog\/make-sense-raise-minimum-wage\/","title":{"rendered":"Does It Make Sense To Raise The Minimum Wage?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-24\" src=\"http:\/\/rochesterbusinessdirectory.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/money3-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"twenty seven dollars\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>The minimum wage issue is a controversial one that creates a lot of heated debate between the believers and non-believers.\u00a0 If you really read into it and think about the pros and cons carefully you will probably find yourself being able to see why both sides believe what they believe.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reasons for a minimum wage hike:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Put more money in the pockets of financially struggling Americans<\/li>\n<li>Ripple effect causes other job wages to rise that are paying close to minimum wage right now<\/li>\n<li>Higher incomes mean a decrease in the need for public assistance<\/li>\n<li>Workers have more disposable income to spend and thereby boost the local economy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reasons against minimum wage hikes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Higher wages also raise costs on employers in other areas such as Social Security matches, Medicare matches, workers compensation insurance, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Increases pressure on business owners to avoid hiring additional employees<\/li>\n<li>Could help cause a small businesses to fail that is borderline profitable<\/li>\n<li>Increase production costs eventually lead to higher prices (inflation)<\/li>\n<li>Decreases pressure on low wage employees to train themselves for higher paying jobs<\/li>\n<li>Each minimum wage increase makes it a little harder to launch a new successful business<\/li>\n<li>Increased production costs make American companies less competitive globally giving more advantages to the countries that have already taken many American jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why do we constantly revisit this debate every few years instead of getting at the root of the problem? <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The root of the problem is not that the minimum wage is too low right now.\u00a0\u00a0 The root of the problem is that most American workers hate being forced to train for better careers and better jobs.\u00a0 Most of us hate it.\u00a0 \u00a0Let\u2019s consider a fast food worker for example as they have been talked about quite frequently in relation to the minimum wage debate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-25\" src=\"http:\/\/rochesterbusinessdirectory.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/mcdonalds-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"McDonalds\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>You would think that someone who takes a job at a fast food restaurant would have one of two goals in mind when they take that job.\u00a0 You would think they are either treating that job as a temporary job while they are training for a different career; Or else you would think that they are taking that job with the hope of moving up into management at that company.<\/p>\n<p>The minimum wage issue only really becomes an issue when a person takes a minimum wage job and expects to be able to have that same job forever.\u00a0\u00a0 If a worker takes a job flipping burgers at McDonalds and expects to just keep that job indefinitely while getting a commensurate increase in wages at regular intervals, then that person has a misguided mindset.\u00a0\u00a0 Those types of jobs are not meant to be lifelong \u201cprovide a good income for the family\u201d types of jobs.\u00a0\u00a0 If you take a minimum wage paying job with the hopes that you can provide for your family for life, then you are certainly setting yourself up for a lifelong financial struggle.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t this common knowledge among every American?<\/p>\n<p>The same situation really applies with almost any career these days.\u00a0\u00a0 Employees, even college educated employees, will take a position at a company with the assumption that their career is going to be around throughout their entire life.\u00a0 They assume that, even if they have to leave this particular company after ten years, they will just make a lateral move to another company with a job opening for that same type of job.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately the world is evolving too fast for that to happen in most fields.\u00a0\u00a0 The guy who used to repair televisions and VCR\u2019s probably thought he would have a lifelong career repairing those types of machines too.\u00a0 After all, that is a highly skilled job.\u00a0 Yet, most of those jobs have evaporated.\u00a0 Look at what is happening with computer technicians who service residential computer equipment.\u00a0 They are witnessing the very same thing happening before their eyes.\u00a0\u00a0 And those are usually college educated people.<\/p>\n<p>There are some careers that are relatively safe for now.\u00a0\u00a0 But eventually every career faces the same problem regardless of whether it pays minimum wage or not.\u00a0\u00a0 Workers need to be constantly training themselves for better positions that offer higher pay and more stability.\u00a0 That is the cure for the minimum wage issue.\u00a0\u00a0 Minimum wage jobs should be thought of as temporary work only.\u00a0\u00a0 Anyone who expects a minimum wage job to magically turn into a better paying job is certainly focusing their energies on the wrong thing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The minimum wage issue is a controversial one that creates a lot of heated debate between the believers and non-believers.\u00a0 If you really read into it and think about the pros and cons carefully you will probably find yourself being able to see why both sides believe what they believe. &nbsp; Reasons for a minimum [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-23","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Does It Make Sense To Raise The Minimum Wage?
